We recently began our study of the element of art, shape. While discussing the two types of shapes, organic and geometric, we took a deeper look into Graffiti Art. The letters artists use when creating graffiti are essentially organic shapes. Therefore, students created graffiti as a means to better understand the difference in organic and geometric shapes. During this project, we conversed about the illegal side of Graffiti Art. Students were able to gain an appreciation for the type of artwork, but also recognized it as vandalism first and not solely art. A few examples from each Art 1 class are shown below:
